Navigating Grant Opportunities for A.I. Implementation in Courts

For courts across the country, the beginning of a new year means the start of budget planning and considering opportunities for technology enhancements. Too often, these two initiatives work against one another. When funds become scarce and enhancement projects become more expensive, court staff are forced to make tough decisions, cutting valuable technology enhancement projects that would otherwise streamline operations and enhance access to justice. To overcome these hurdles, it is critical for courts to be aware and take advantage of grant opportunities that can aid in the funding and development of powerful A.I. tools such as Advanced Robot Solutions’ A.I. self-serve kiosk and A.I. chatbot.

Applying for grants to fund A.I. implementation projects can be time-consuming, which is why it’s essential to apply for grants that align with the priorities of a court’s A.I. implementation project. So, make sure you carefully review all of the criteria before you start writing your grant proposal. Whether a project consists of implementing avatar-guided e-filing kiosks, interactive wayfinding (see our kiosks here), A.I.-powered chatbots (Meet SANDI here), or all of the above below, you’ll find some of the institutions and grants that are in place to support your court’s next A.I. project.

State Justice Institute (SJI) Grants

The State Justice Institute offers several grant programs that courts can leverage for A.I. implementation in courts:

  • Project Grants: These could fund larger-scale implementations of A.I. solutions.

  • Technical Assistance Grants: Ideal for courts seeking expert guidance on integrating new technologies.

  • Strategic Initiatives Grants: May support innovative A.I. projects aligned with SJI’s strategic priorities.

Applications for SJI grants are accepted quarterly. To learn more about SJI’s grant opportunities, visit their website.

Technology Initiative Grant (TIG) Program

The Legal Services Corporation’s TIG program provides funding to support innovative uses of technology in legal services delivery. While primarily aimed at legal aid organizations, courts partnering with these entities can also benefit from this funding for A.I. chatbots or self-service kiosks that enhance access to legal information. Learn more about the TIG Grant Program here.

Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) Funding

The BJA offers various funding opportunities that could potentially support court technology projects. Courts should monitor the BJA website for relevant grant announcements throughout the year. To learn more, visit the BJA here.

State Supreme Court Grants

State Supreme Courts also offer grant opportunities for courts to implement technology enhancements such as A.I.-powered tools for operations and customer service. The Supreme Courts of Indiana, Ohio, and Illinois all offer technology grants for courts in these states. The LaSalle County Circuit Court was able to work with ARS to deploy an A.I. e-filing and check-in kiosk system and A.I. chatbot thanks to the funding provided by the Illinois Supreme Court Technology Grant. To learn more about these grant opportunities, visit your state Supreme Court's website or visit the below links.

By exploring and taking advantage of these grant opportunities, courts can position themselves to acquire critical and innovative technologies like Advanced Robot Solutions’ A.I. self-service kiosk and A.I. chatbot. These tools have the potential to significantly enhance court efficiency and accessibility, aligning with the broader goals of modernizing the justice system.
